When Can I Start Working and For How Long? At age 14+ you can work a maximum of 2 hrs a day, if it’s a school day then you can only work between 7-8am and 5-7pm in the evening. On a Saturday you are allowed to work five hours between 7am and 7pm. On a Sunday you are allowed to work only 2 hours between 7am and 7pm. You are allowed to work during your school holidays so long as you have a full two weeks off with out employment.

 At age 15+ it’s the same as the above except you can work a maximum of 8 hours on a Saturday between 7am and 7pm. At age 16+ you are allowed to work full time a maximum number of 40hrs a week. You must also have 12hrs rest between shifts.

National Insurance

Everyone is given a unique National Insurance Number, you will need this for when you begin a new job, so you can start paying national insurance and it will also allow you to claim social security benefits. You should get your National Insurance Number Card through the post just before your 16th Birthday.

Looking for a Job

When looking for a job, part-time or full time you should check the local newspapers, the job centre and websites, even ask around. You can even have a look around the shop windows or ask inside to find out if they are looking for any new employees. The most important thing is to get out there and look!
