Y Grow-It

A Quick History of Y Grow-It
“Y Grow-it” Youth Urban Garden is an initiative in which young people are involved in the renovation of a disused communal green space shared by Y sort it and Blue Triangle Housing project.

Over 30 young people have volunteered their time and effort to created a wonderful space where they can learn about gardening and the environment but also how to grow their own vegetables and eat more healthily – the garden has been an incredibly success with young people working together regardless of ability to produce a safe, relaxing and fun area.
Over 30 young people aged 12 -25 that attend Y sort it / Blue Triangle have been involved in:
• Environmental discussion and planning
• Apply for planning permission from Clydebank Housing Association
• Volunteering our time whilst working towards a MV Award
• Building raised beds from recycled scaffolding wood
• Planting fruit and vegetables
• Collecting Plastic bottles for building a greenhouse
• Planting different types of flowers / plants
• Involving the residents from Blue Triangle Housing Project who have access to the communal garden, to help maintain the garden
• Painting the fences and relaying slabs in partnership with Community Service making the garden fully accessible for wheelchair users
• Maintaining the garden on a weekly basis

What's Growing on now
The success of the first part of Y Grow-It last year has allowed for us to plan for the future. One such project which has been going on for the past year has seen Y Sort-It slowly gathering up used 2 Ltr plastic bottles for what we hope will lead to our very own ultra enviromentally recycled green house.
At the start of April 2011 the Green House challenge was launched and its main goal is to allow young people to build their own green house and then hopefully lots of delicious food.

Check out the news section for a press release that was sent out at the completion of building the green house. Remember yo keep coming back here to find out what our next great green fingered adventure will be as there's going to be alot happening over the coming months.
